I recently stopped rping with someone, let’s call her Jane, who had a knack for taking a canon character from our fandom and making AU’s for them. Alternate Universe characters are fine, and when done well they can really provide a wonderful exploration of canon and provide a chance to rp with people outside your fandom, if you’re normally uncomfortable with that.

But Jane made her AU’s SO alternate that they ended up being just bare bone parodies of the original characters. It was to the point where just about everyone in the group noticed that her character was so far from canon as to be almost completely unrecognizable, and when anybody tried to bring this up to her, Jane would plead loudly that it was an AU and she could do what she wanted, and didn’t care.

This eventually led to people drifting away from her, including me. I love AU’s and OC’s, but when there’s no distinction between the two it’s almost like a smack in the face to the character you’re attempting to play.
